We celebrated New Year on the 31st of December and on the 1st of January. I met with my parents and my sister. It was wonderful! Before the New Year we decorated the Christmas tree (the symbol of New Year) with toys and garlands. We decorated walls with tinsel and garlands and hang a window decoration made of paper in the form of snowflakes, hares, Santa Clause, etc. We bought and made the gifts and put them under the tree.

 How can one do without a Christmas dinner? We cooked mashed potatoes, salads and much more dishes and laid the table. The congratulation of the President was on TV. Then the sound of clock bells was heard. We opened champagne and made a wish with our eyes closed. After midnight we congratulated each other with the New Year and went to watch fireworks.

New Year is my favourite holiday. We celebrated it on December 31.

This year I celebrated it with my family. Before the New Year’s Eve we bought a Christmas tree and decorated it with colourful balls and bright lights. We bought gifts for our friends and relatives. My mother cooked a holiday dinner. We made delicious salads, chicken with potatoes and mushroom. We also baked a cake. We bought a lot of fruits and sweets. We spread a beautiful tablecloth and put plates and cups on the table.

Finally, the New Year came! We congratulated our nearest and dearest and wished them a happy New Year. We enjoyed the food and drinks. We danced, sang songs and played. We had a good time together.

The New Year’s Day was a cheerful and happy holiday. I liked it.

My favourite holiday is Christmas. My family and I celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. A lot of people celebrate it on the 7th of January, as well. It is the day when Jesus Christ was born. Christians all over the world go to churches. It is also a very traditional family holiday. In my family we usually decorate a Christmas tree with lights, tinsel and ornaments. This year we went to meet Christ’s birthday in the local church. We saw a beautiful and unforgettable Christmas play.

We also had a traditional Christmas dinner at our friends’ in Soligorsk. We ate a delicious roast duck and salad. We bought a cake and some fruit. We also prepared a present for our friends – a nice set of cups. As they are a young family, cups will be very useful for them.

We came home very late. I went to bed. I was a bit upset because my parents didn’t say me anything about my present. But to my great surprise I got a nice present early in the morning. Mum woke me up to go for a walk with  my little  dog Benya. It was really angry because it was too early. But when I opened my eyes I realized why my mum woke me up. She wanted to make me a surprise!

Before the New Year we decorated the New Year tree hanging tinsel and garlands, and putting a star on its top. We prepared all sorts of dishes and put them on the table. Then we put our presents into the bags and laid them under the New Year tree. We put on our smart clothes. As for me, I was wearing a gorgeous dress. All the family listened to the President’s speech. When the clock struck 12, we drank champagne and made our wishes. After that we went out into the street and pulled crackers. Coming home, we congratulated our friends and opened the bags with the presents.

Our large and friendly family decided to celebrate New Year in a merry, friendly and warm atmosphere of our house. When you are in a company of your nearest and dearest, you can enjoy yourself talking with everybody. We never get bored together. There is always something to discuss at a wonderful holiday table on New Year’s Eve.

We always think over the laying of the table. The list of traditional holiday dishes includes "Olivier” salad, a roasted duck with apples under golden-browned crust and our favourite cake "Napoleon”. All these delights have always been associated with this bright winter celebration which is filled with the smell of Christmas tree, tangerines and sparkling lights in our hands.

Another tradition is to put up the New Year tree decorated with colourfull balls and shiny tinsel. All the members of the family enjoy the smell and beauty of the holiday.

Christmas is my favourite family holiday. I love it very much. We always prepare beforehand for this holiday. We celebrate Christmas on December 25.

On December 24 we prepare different delicious dishes, buy presents, make congratulation cards for each other wishing "Merry Christmas!”

We put up the Christmas tree long before the holiday, decorate it with different toys. We also decorate the house.

On Christmas morning we go to church because Christmas is Jesus Christ’s birthday. In the afternoon we finish our preparations and welcome the guests to the gala-dinner.

During the dinner we talk and everybody is in a good mood. After that we give our presents and have fun till night. I love Christmas!
